Psychotherapy Opportunities

The major difference about the approach developed and taught by Milton Erickson, MD is its emphasis on wellness instead of sickness.  Several of the buzz words that are used to describe the Ericksonian approach include the following:

  • Health-oriented, not pathology-oriented.
  • Developing treatment for the person, not psychological 'categories' or theories.
  • Developing a unique approach for each unique person, not the same treatment for each problem.
  • Goal-directed, not analysis-oriented.
  • Future-oriented, not past-oriented.
  • Speaks to the client's model of the world, not demanding compliance to the therapist's model.
  • Emphasizes strengths, not shortcomings.
  • Understands the person in their history and environment, not isolated from it.
  • Helps clients get the resources they need in the context they need them. This may involve simple talking, hypnosis, storytelling, homework assignments, or other well-known Ericksonian techniques.
  • Integrating treatment throughout the broad range of contexts from hypnotherapy to individual, children, couples, and family therapy as needed.
